NAMI SWI Coronavirus Update/Support Group Closures
March 16, 2020
Dear NAMI Southwestern Illinois Friends:
The leadership of NAMI SWI has been looking carefully at information about the spread of COVID-19, also known as the Coronavirus. We want to ensure the safety, as much as we are able, of all the individuals and families who participate in our programs. Informational material about COVID-19 from the national office is available here.
We are in ongoing contact with the national NAMI office and NAMI Illinois regarding policies that may be implemented as well as other recommendations. NAMI Illinois has cancelled an upcoming state-level training scheduled for early April, and will determine at a later date whether to cancel another training scheduled for later in April.
NAMI Illinois has advised us that some of the affiliates in our state are considering a 30-day suspension of in-person support groups and classes. We have made the decision to suspend our in-person groups and classes for 30 days as well. We are in the process of determining the best way to conduct our groups and classes in an online format.
We are very much aware that many of our program participants live with physical health challenges as well as mental health conditions, which place them in a higher risk category. We have taken this into consideration as we take steps to keep everyone as safe as possible.
We will be in touch as plans develop regarding how we will continue to offer our programs in the communities we serve. Please feel free to call our office if you have questions. We will make every effort to keep you informed on a timely basis. We will be reevaluating whether to continue the online format as the end of the initial 30-day period approaches, and will provide updates in the meantime.
Our mission is always our top priority, along with assuring the safety and well-being of the people we serve. Thank you for your support and patience during this challenging time.
